Why was the Battle of Verdun so bad?
Verdun failed for the same reason every other battle failed in WW1. The generals did not understand modern artillery and the huge advantage defensive entrenchment provided. They were still attacking with lines of men with long rifles designed for 1850s stationary combat.

Even so, the Germans were not prepared to give ground. Casualties rose as villages such as Fleury changed hands several times. There was also terrible fighting for the forts taken by the Germans earlier in the battle before these too fell to the French.
