Verdun was the site of a major battle, the longest-lasting of the First World War. One of the costliest battles in military history, Verdun exemplified the policy of a war of attrition pursued by both sides, which led to an enormous loss of life and very long casualty lists.

Just as the French became obsessed with holding the fortress, the Germans fell into their own trap and continued bloody attacks for little gain. The Battle of the Somme, opened on 1 July, committing both French and British troops together, soon distracted the Germans from their offensive at Verdun.

At 4am on 21 February 1916 the battle began, with a massive artillery bombardment and a steady advance by troops of the German Fifth Army under Crown Prince Wilhelm. Five days into the battle, German forces captured Fort Douaumont, the largest and highest of the 19 forts protecting Verdun.

With French roots, Verdun means “green knoll,” and is considered a habitational or place name that was given to those who lived in Verdun, France. Verdun is the largest city in the Meuse department in Grand Est, France, and was also the location of the longest-lasting major battle of the First World War.
